Tanenbaum Institute for Science in Sport (TISS): A framework for research excellence in high-performance sport science and sport medicine supporting athletes at all levels

“Sport unites us, inspires us and offers all people a path forward toward becoming their best selves.” These are the words of lead donor Larry Tanenbaum, chairman of the Larry and Judy Tanenbaum Family Foundation and Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment. It is his Foundation's gift of $20 million that has made possible the creation of TISS, with aspirations to become one of the most influential and prominent research centres for sport science and sport medicine in the world.

TISS and DSI partner to seed research to advance wearable health technology

The Tanenbaum Institute for Science in Sport (TISS) and the Data Sciences Institute (DSI) at the University of Toronto are pleased to award a Catalyst Grant for research in the Development of Convolutional Neural Network for Motion Artifact Mitigation in Wearable PPG Devices. Co-led by Professors Daniel Franklin and Chris McIntosh, the project aims to revolutionize athletics and sports medicine by integrating novel sensors with advanced machine learning algorithms.

TISS funds research with potential to dramatically impact health & performance of athletes across all populations

Four faculty members of the University of Toronto Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education, Timothy Burkhart, Robert Bentley, Jenna Gillen and Catherine Sabiston have been awarded seed grants to conduct pilot studies in areas furthering the mission of the Tanenbaum Institute for Science in Sport (TISS) - to translate scientific discoveries into innovations that can dramatically impact the health and performance of athletes.

The TISS conference will be held on Sept 14 & 15, 2024. Bringing together high performance sport science and sport medicine across the athlete development spectrum: Discovery, Clinical, and Applied Research. TISS aims to translate research into interventions that can unlock human potential in high performance sport.
