TISS Affiliate Open Access Publication Subsidy

Open Access Subsidy for 2025 is currently OPEN for application


The Tanenbaum Institute for Science in Sport (TISS) is pleased to offer TISS affiliated researchers and trainees access to this subsidy program designed to encourage publication and distribution of research through Open Access publications/journals in an effort to further the Institutes' Open Science mandate and encourage barrier free dissemination of research and knowledge mobilization.

Applications are welcomed from all TISS-affiliated researchers with publications in sport science, sport medicine, and sport analytics within the institutes overall mission and mandate areas.

Eligibility Criteria:

Amount: Up to $5000 per publication & applicant.

Please note this is a reimbursement-based subsidy, TISS will reimburse the publication fees up to $5k, or the amount of the publication fees, whichever is less. Restriction of one subsidy per applicant applies per calendar year (Jan - Dec).

This subsidy is administered on a first-come, first-served basis annually (Jan - Dec) until the Institute's allocated funding for this subsidy has been spent, the status is indicated on this page above in either green or red text (i.e. "open for application" or "closed for application")

Applicant eligibility: All TISS-affiliated members, researchers, and trainees are eligible to apply for this subsidy. TISS-affiliated includes any TISS funding program recipients (grants, scholarships etc), committee members and any TISS supported post docs, trainees, clinical fellows.

TISS Research Accelerator Grant recipients may only apply for publication of work that is not already funded by the TISS Accelerator Grant program. 

TISS affiliated researchers must list ‘Tanenbaum Institute for Science in Sport’ as one of the author’s affiliations in addition to any funding support acknowledgements.

Process: Follow the steps below to apply for the OA publication subsidy program:

  1. Applicant completes the TISS Open Access Publication subsidy application (linked below) and submits via email to tiss@utoronto.ca, a copy of the full publication is required as part of the application.
  2. The institute will review the subsidy request and provide a decision within 14 business days.
  3. If approved, the successful applicant will be required to submit proof of payment, as well as proof of publication in the OA journal indicated in the application (if not already published) to TISS
    • As this is a reimbursement-based subsidy the proof of payment receipt is required.
    • Confirmation showing "TISS "Tanenbaum Institute for Science in Sport" as author's affiliation must be included

Institute Overview

The Tanenbaum Institute for Science in Sport (TISS) combines and leverages the immense strengths of three partners—the research enterprises, academic teaching, learning programs, clinical resources, large and diverse varsity athlete base, and training facilities of the University of Toronto’s Faculty of Kinesiology & Physical Education (KPE), the Temerty Faculty of Medicine at the University of Toronto, and Sinai Health

The Institute will catalyze research into a diverse range of disciplines, driving empirically based outcomes that will serve high performance athletes including para-athletes and athletes representing other diverse and underrepresented communities. This work will lead to new knowledge informed by data and analyses generated by the Institute’s research teams, and the creation of strategies and interventions that will:

  • Enhance and sustain athlete performance, health, wellness, and safety
  • Reduce risk of injuries and maltreatment
  • Accelerate recovery from training, competition, and injuries
  • Advance high-performance sport in a manner that is safe, welcoming, inclusive and accessible to all
  • Contribute to the advancement of diversity, equity and inclusion through the activities of the Institute

Institute Mission

The mission of the Tanenbaum Institute for Science in Sport (TISS) is to support research that advances high performance in sport for professional and non-professional athletes and para-athletes, as well as for members of the wider community, both able bodied and with disabilities, who want to optimize their recreational participation in sport.

Institute Outcomes

With unparalleled resources and talent across University of Toronto and Sinai Health, the Tanenbaum Institute will significantly advance science and its application with the aim to:

  • enhance and sustain competitive performance for athletes of all levels and every background, including para-athletes and athletes representing other diverse and under-represented populations
  • augment and amplify physical and mental training effects
  • reduce threats to athlete safety, including the threat of athlete maltreatment
  • model/predict/reduce the probability of injury
  • improve injury recovery length and outcomes
  • develop effective nutrition and mental health regimens
  • develop more effective measures to identify the severity of sports concussion, and accelerate the rate of recovery and return to play
  • develop and assess new innovative commercial technologies and products for applications to high performance sports
  • use data analytics to predict and augment individual and team performance, health and wellbeing, and to improve athlete recruitment outcomes
