Can restricting blood flow to athletes' limbs while training boost performance? U of T researchers investigate

Ischemic preconditioning (IPC), a technique used to prepare an organ or tissue for a lack of blood or oxygen supply, was originally developed for use in clinical settings where there is an expected lack of blood and oxygen supply, for example during surgery or after an adverse event like a heart attack. But could it be used to enhance athletic performance?

About three and half years ago, Professor Ira Jacobs, then dean of the University of Toronto Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education (KPE), got a phone call from Larry Tanenbaum’s executive assistant, who told him that the chairman of Maple Leaf Sport and Entertainment (MLSE) would like to meet with him in his office.

Tanenbaum Family creates TISS to impact the health and performance of all athletes

TISS is possible thanks to a generous $20 million gift from the Larry and Judy Tanenbaum Family Foundation. Larry Tanenbaum says they are proud to join with U of T and Sinai Health in transforming athlete health and well-being. “TISS brings together sports medicine, sport science and data science to encourage athletic engagement, enhance performance and accelerate recovery and rehabilitation.”

“Sport unites us, inspires us and offers all people a path forward toward becoming their best selves.” These are the words of lead donor Larry Tanenbaum, chairman of the Larry and Judy Tanenbaum Family Foundation and Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment. It is his Foundation's gift of $20 million that has made possible the creation of TISS, with aspirations to become one of the most influential and prominent research centres for sport science and sport medicine in the world.

TISS Implementation Plan

The mission of the Tanenbaum Institute for Science in Sport (TISS) is to support research that advances high performance in sport for professional and non-professional athletes and para-athletes, as well as for members of the wider community, both able bodied and with disabilities, who want to optimize their recreational participation in sport.
